The Cathedral of St. John the Divine provides a basic level of accessibility for people in wheelchairs, and several improvements are being planned. The Cathedral can be reached by public transportation. There is curbside parking nearby and a limited amount of parking both in the Cathedral Close and in a small parking lot on the north side of the Cathedral. Also on that north side, you will find a ramp that leads to a door to the nave.
Once inside, the use of chairs rather than pews makes it easy to position a wheelchair at any chosen spot. The ambulatory and the chapels off of it, used frequently for weekday services and exhibits, are accessible from the north aisle by means of a ramp. This ramp was financed in part by the Ruth McDonald Memorial Fund in memory of a founding member and longtime chairperson of the Diocesan Committee on Accessibility. There are currently no wheelchair-accessible bathrooms, although that situation will be remedied once the reconstruction of the gift shop area is complete. There is also a long-term plan for a wheelchair-accessible entrance by elevator near the south tower at Amsterdam Avenue. There is a temporary portable accessible toilet located in the lot north of the Cathedral near the wheelchair access ramp. |
